Cape Bruny Lighthouse - Tasmania

Description

I'm posting another film shot, this time taken on Bruny Island in South Eastern Tasmania sometime in the 1980's. The same camera, Asahi Pentax SV, as in the previous photo was used. The film was Kodak CP 100. The negative is not in good condition and I had to clean up quite a few of the worst scratches in PS but as can be seen, I didn't remove all of them.

In my sailing days, I have anchored overnight in the sheltered waters of the D'Entrecasteaux Channel behind cape Bruny and enjoyed seeing the loom of its light sweep past in the darkness.

I've also had the experience of being shown the view from the top by the lighthouse keeper when it used to be manned. Miles out to sea, through powerful binoculars, huge swells could be seen crashing over a lone rocky island. I understand the lighthouse ceased operation in 1996.

  • Interesting treatment. The distressing of age gives it an almost underwater quality. Thanks for your comment re B/W versus colour by the way. I agree with you. There was a full range of tones in the shot from true black to white and plenty of detail

  • I always liked light houses; most of them are really beautiful, and the mere thought of people living on those remote places, exposed to all weathers is enough for the imagination to start spinning.
Sadly many of the lighthouses are closed down now.
Nice affect the scratches of the negative, it almost gives the impression of water spray on a window.

  • It really does feel like one of those snow globes. Very cool texture.
    Christopher @ 2009-10-17
  • What a beautiful old lighthouse. Until I read it was film I thought you'd distressed it. Even nicer since it's real:-)
