Outback Queensland - Road to Opalton

Description

From archives again, this scene was shot on film in the afterglow of sunset in outback Queensland near the remote outpost of Opalton. The photo was posted once before but I wanted to do a full page version this time. I don't have a record of the film type.

The camera used was an Asahi Pentax SV, known in the US under the name of Honeywell. Unfortunately, this camera developed shutter problems and has been retired.

I took this photo in the mid to late 90's. There is nothing out here, just flat land and scrub. Shortly after this was captured, dozens of Kangaroos appeared and driving was very stressful. I wanted to return to some semblance of civilization but my progress was made excruciatingly slow due to these animals bounding across in front of my car.

  • I just love film! For the last 2 months I have only shot film. And this one really shows, why film is still good. Plus the grain adds life to it, I think. Film is not dead!

  • Kangaroos are stressful in poor light. I was on my bike on evening and ever after slowing to around 40kmh decided to stop and wait an hour or so. On the image, it makes me want to go there. Off to find Opalton on a map now.

  • A great picture Gavin..I like the deep saturation and grainy look! Being a filmmaker I too will miss 'film' stock but I feel it is futile to resist change...let's look at the advantages of digital!
